Mussoorie the Queen of the Hills is one of the most visited destination in utttarakhand but the traffic jam during the tourist season is one of the biggest problem for tourist as well as the locals. During the tourist season people have to be stuck in jam for hours. To deal with this, the construction of a two-lane bypass tunnel is proposed here, which will be about four kilometres in length.

The Public Works Department is preparing its DPR with the help of an Italian agency. The estimated cost of the tunnel will be more than Rs 13 hundred crore. In this regard, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued information.

Once the proposed tunnel is ready the vehicles going to Dhanaulti, Tehri, Uttarkashi and Yamunotri will not have to get stuck in the jams of Mussoorie city. Along with the local people, the tourists visiting Mussoorie will also get rid of the jam. Ayaz Ahmed, HOD Chief Engineer of PWD says that if the work starts on time, the tunnel will be ready within the next four years. The special thing is that the work of construction of this tunnel will be in the hands of state level engineers instead of central level.

The central government wanted to hand over this tunnel to the central agency NHAI, but Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami wants this tunnel to be made by the state’s own agency PWD. This will increase the efficiency of engineers. Ahmed said that this would be a good opportunity for the department to build such a long tunnel for the first time, which would increase the exposure of the department. Now let us tell you about all the features and special things of this tunnel at a glance.

  • The entry point of the tunnel will be ITBP Rock Temple at Cart Mackenzie Road.
  • Near JW Marriott Hotel on NH-707A on Tehri district border
  • This project will be ready at a cost of about 1370 crores.
  • Due to this tunnel, people will get a bypass of about 10 km section of NH.
