Raksha Bandhan the festival is all about the bond between brother and sister and a traditional Hindu rite to signify the sibling bond. The annual ceremony is central to sisters tying Rakhi on brother’s wrist and praying for their prosperity while brothers vow to protect their sisters. The festival is supposed to be a very auspicious one amongst the Hindu calendar followers as the particular day has significance for prosperity and happiness all year long. It is believed that when the Rakhi is tied on this particular day, it brings a lot of good luck in the family throughout the year.

Independence Day in India is an annual celebration of commemorating to being free from the British forces back in 1947. This day people hoist the tricolor flag around the country while arranging colorful parades while singing and dancing to the tunes of patriotic songs. The roads are filled with celebrations on this day as it’s a national holiday. The Prime Minister of India evidently hoists the Indian flag at Delhi’s Red Fort and delivers a patriotic speech which is nationwide televised. In many parts of India, kite flying competitions and tricolor themed competitions are held to mark the respect for the freedom fighters due to which India got Independence. 

Janmashtami HolidayDate- 19th August

Celebrating the Hindu God Krishna’s birthday, this auspicious day is also celebrated as a country-wide holiday.  Janmashtami or Gokulashtami is a Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of the eight avatar of Hindu God Vishnu. On this day, people usually keep a fast and observe divulgence into devotional songs for the whole day. Devotees of Lord Krishna decorate the God’s altar with a lot of flowers, garlands and sweets to mark the birth of the God. Temples are  usually open till late at night as the birth of Krishna is believed to have happened at midnight and people dress up their little kids as Krishna and celebrate the auspicious festival.

The Hindu festival of Ganesh Chaturthi marks the ascending of Lord Ganesha along with his mother Parvati from Kailash Parvat to earth. Devotees observe fast for 11 days along with prayers and reciting Vedic hymns and scriptures after which they immerse the idol of Ganesha to mark the prosperity all year along. The idols of Ganesha are kept at an immersed surface above the ground in elaborately decorated pandals or tents where devotees offer prayers to the Lord and wish that God visits them every year with goodwill and prosperity.
