The sight of this avalanche has left the pilgrims breathless. During the previous pilgrimage season, avalanches occurred three times on these snowy mountains. This time as well, an avalanche incident was reported in the month of April. Environmental experts have expressed concern over the recurring avalanches in Kedarnath.

What is Avalanche

An avalanche refers to a rapid flow of snow down a steep slope or mountainside. It is a natural disaster that occurs when a mass of snow becomes unstable and starts sliding downhill. Avalanches can be triggered by various factors, including snowfall, wind, temperature changes, or human activity. They can occur in mountainous regions, particularly in areas with heavy snowfall and steep slopes.

Avalanches can vary in size and intensity, ranging from small and relatively harmless slides to large-scale, destructive events. The force and speed of an avalanche can cause significant damage to vegetation, infrastructure, and pose a serious threat to human life. Avalanches are particularly dangerous to those engaged in winter sports, mountaineering, or living in avalanche-prone areas.

Efforts are made to monitor and predict avalanches using various techniques, including snowpack analysis, weather monitoring, and terrain assessment. Safety measures such as avalanche forecasting, avalanche control methods, and education on avalanche awareness and rescue techniques are implemented to mitigate the risks associated with avalanches.
